The inflammatory cells infiltrating human tumors are the evidence of immune surveillance attempting to detect emerging tumor cells and eliminate them. However, the response against cancer is usually incapacitated due to functional impairment of these immune system cells. Recently, cancer immunotherapy showed unprecedented responses in patients with advanced-stage tumors. This approach relies on trengthening the ability of the immune system to identify and destroy tumor cells, and to elicit a long-lasting memory of this interaction. The focus in our lab is on finding novel therapeutic entities and treatment modalities to modulate the immune system to help it combat cancer.
